An older episode of How I Met Your Mother alludes to the Cheerleader effect.
Glad you asked...the cheerleader effect is where a group of girls or guys looks attractive as a group BUT if you take each member of that group individually they are in fact, on the contrary, unattractive. This cheerleader effect dates back to ancient Broman times where Barnibus Stinson made this significant discovery and documented it in the ancient 'Bro Code'. From this, the Cheerleader effect has evolved and although many interpretations of it has inevitably taken place, the definition still stands as it is today. Of course men and women nowadays both have different perceptions of what is attractive and what attracts them personally, but the most important thing is that a girl or guy almost always looks more attractive in a group. Take the picture below for example:

So at first glance, we naturally group them as being 'hot'. Aha...but...you have just been succumb to the cheerleader effect - take each of those girls individually...take one good look at each of them. Now - are they hot?
Don't worry that you have succumb to this effect, it takes extensive training and lessons from the all knowledgeable Barnibus and his godlike words from the 'Bro Code'. Every man/woman does this and it is perfectly normal. But for next time, when you go to a bar/club or really just anywhere, when you see a bunch of hot looking women, take a good look at them one by one.
